+OSHA Finalizes New Hazard Communication Standard
Globally Harmonized System Summary
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have finalized a new rule revising its hazard communication standard. Changes to the standard will now align it with the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). This is one of the agency’s most significant rulemaking efforts in over a decade. The rule was released March 26, 2012, and will affect companies who have chemicals in the workplace. It is estimated that more than 5 million businesses across the country will be affected, and more than 40 million employees will need to be re-trained on hazard communication. This alignment was recognized as a necessity by the United Nations (UN), due to differing methods of hazard communication between countries. It is intended to "harmonize" existing hazard communication systems by establishing a unique process for identifying hazardous materials and giving warnings to users. Alignment with the GHS classification system is expected to streamline international shipment and sales of chemical products, ensure people worldwide receive the same basic standards of protection when using products, facilitate training and literacy concerns, decrease supplier costs and improve overall workplace injury rates.
