Bringing OSHA Safety to Public Sector

Jun 20, 2018

A newly-passed law in Massachusetts makes changes to employee safety requirements in the public sector workplace. The Department of Labor Standards (DLS) is charged with enforcing the amended law, which takes effect on February 1, 2019.

This law, which updates and clarifies the existing safety law, applies specifically to employers in the public sector. OSHA continues to oversee safety protocols for the private sector. However, the enhanced requirements in Massachusetts are essentially the same as OSHA’s, with similar reporting and compliance mandates.

The DLS will conduct outreach to employers in the coming months. Compliance tools will include self-audit checklists, template programs, and sample trainings for public workplaces. In the interim, the current law G.L. c.149 § 6 ½ remains in effect.
